Interview with Scarlett Ballantyne of Beautilicious

Beautilicious in South Surrey was one of my very first posts on My Urban Suburban, back in early August 2008.  Since then, I’ve gotten to know owner Scarlett Ballantyne and continue to be impressed by her kindness, generosity and passion for her business.  Her shop reflects her fun, flirty and eclectic style and her warmth is evident the moment you enter the shop.  I hope you enjoy getting to know her as much as I have!

Tell us a little about your shop: what you carry, services you provide and who your custumers are:

Beautilicious is a shop for women and girls and girly girls!  We have hard to find brands and products relating to all things beauty.  We also carry jewellery, scarves, some hard to find little gifts and purses as well as top makeup brands, Cargo, Kevyn Aucoin, DuWop and Girlactik.

This is a second career for you.  What were you doing before?  And what was your inspiration for starting Beautilicious?

I was an interior designer for many years, working for a large paint company doing colour trend research, PR and design.  After many years of travelling and being away from home (and having two babies in that time), I decided to pursue something local that would keep me home more and let me play with some of my favourite colours – only in makeup!

What has been the most surprising, or best thing about owning a beauty shop in South Surrey?

The best thing has been getting to know people in my community.  Because I travelled and was out of the city 70% of the time in my former job, I never felt roots in South Surrey, or that I knew too many women. Even with kids, I never really had the time to connect with many other moms.  In this job, I have met many people and also had the chance to make some new friends in the community.  I have found it surprising how many people just drop in for a chat, or to see what is new because they like the store and it’s ambience.

What are some of the challenges?

I think the challenges are getting people to our location – we are a little hidden and not in a large traffic mall (on King George Hwy, by Choices Market in S. Surrey). The second thing would be keeping the most popular makeup colours and choices in stock.

What new products can we expect to see you carrying in the New Year?

In the new year we are going to focus on skincare with a few new lines and then some new organic body products. We are also going to keep many of our fun favourites and expand our offering with those brands (Jaqua and Bliss). You will see a lot more purses and accessories in our store in the new year also.

If customers come into your store and need a few essential items, what would you suggest they get?

Cargo Blu-Ray concealer, great for fine lines.  Duwop Lip Venom, K-palette eyeliner and Pink Buttercream Frosting scented products from Jaqua.

Final thoughts:  Any beauty tips for our readers?

Don’t be afraid of the smoky eye!  We can do it for you and teach you how to do it yourself. The mistake most people make is not using enough makeup product!

Thanks for your time, Scarlett!
