My Urban Suburban

I’m ashamed to admit to you all, that until recently (like 2 weeks ago), I was still making the drive into Yaletown to get my hair done!  I know, hypocritical of me, wasn’t it?  But you’ll forgive, right?  Because hair is a big deal.  Huge.  You can’t tell me it’s not.  Especially for a girl like me who has unruly curly hair that gets flat ironed every day.  I need a hair stylist who understands the attitude of curly hair!

But ok, I knew I needed to find someone closer to home, so that’s exactly what I did.  I felt like a horrible cheat because I love my stylist in Vancouver, but the drive could no longer be justified.  So on the recommendation of several friends and readers, I checked out Black Orchid Hair Studio in Langley City.

First of all, the commute?  MUCH BETTER.  And love their motto: Your downtown boutique experience in Langley. Clearly a place after our Urban Suburban hearts.

The studio itself is located in a funky building right in Langley City, called The Muse (across from Price Mart on Fraser Hwy.)  You’ll recognize it by the big fun, colourful circles on the sides.  The salon is modern and contemporary, with great light and lots of windows.

I’ll admit I was scared to have someone else do my hair…actually, terrified would be a better word.  I had a horrible hair cut in 8th grade that took an entire year to grow out and have been a little gun-shy of hair stylists ever since.  But salon owner/stylist Cristina Kirner put me completely at ease.  She understood how to treat my hair, coloured over the nasty grey that has started showing up (not even 30 and they’re rearing their ugly heads!!), and gave me a perfect trim to even out my layers and clean up the ends.

I was very impressed…and relieved.  Aside from the nagging guilt I was feeling over cheating on my former-stylist, I could not have been happier with the experience!

Black Orchid is a full-service salon, offering hair styling, makeup application, air-brush makeup, eyebrow waxing, shaping and tinting, gel sculptured nails and gel overlay.  They use DAVINES natural hair color and styling products and makeup artists work with Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics.
